Clara Milestone Quilt – Part 2

Clara Milestone Quilt – Part 2

If you haven't read part 1 of my Milestone Quilt story, you can read it here. Clara's milestone quilt top is now complete! Below is the progression of the quilt, starting with a block each month for the first year (except for month 11, where I didn't finish in time).  Above you can see the finished quilt top with Clara at 18 months! I have the quilt basted and ready for quilting. The goal is to be done and ready for her 2 year old pictures! I love that this quilt has grown along with … [Read more...]

Clara Milestone Quilt – Part 1

Milestone quilts are a concept that was first introduced to me by Kitty Wilkin (Night Quilter) at the 2018 QuiltCon in Pasadena, CA. She gave a wonderful lecture about different types of quilts you can make to mark milestones. Her main example was a quilt she made for her son, in which she made one block a month for the first year of his life. Then she would photograph him with the block. It was so fun to look at how her son grew as the quilt grew! A bit before QuiltCon I found out I was … [Read more...]

WIP Wednesday – Back It Up

WIP Wednesday – Back It Up

It's time to move on to the back of the picnic quilt! I've been collecting used jeans for a while to use for the back and I am so glad to be at the point where I'm ready to put them to use! I thought it would be cool to have "before" pictures of the pile of jeans and then, when it's done, take an "after" photo what they become. I spent most of yesterday afternoon chopping these up. I debated using scissors vs. my rotary cutter but I found scissors worked better for me. But I … [Read more...]

WIP Wednesday: Board Games!

WIP Wednesday: Board Games!

Earlier this week, I took all the pieces of my picnic quilt out to my "design wall". So close to being a completed top! I just received my shipment of Essex linen in Flax to use for the middle section. I think it will give it a nice break from the busyness of the top and bottom panels. And I finally decided on the third game board! Actually, I let my husband pick and he decided on a game I had never heard of before, Nine Men's Morris. I really liked that it was an old game and … [Read more...]

WIP Wednesday: Return of the Picnic Quilt

I had to search WAY back in the archives to find a post about this Picnic Quilt. It has long been in my head and I've been intimidated by it. Well after 6 months of doing other sewing and not worrying about this one, it doesn't seem so tough anymore. I love it when that happens! For those following this project, I still have two swoon blocks, 2 flying geese panels, and 1 game board to make before piecing everything together... and before piecing the recycled jeans backing. First thing to get … [Read more...]

Barn Door QAL Update – WIP Wednesday

Barn Door QAL Update – WIP Wednesday

I've been complaining that this is the first January ever without any snow. Well, I woke up this morning to 6 inches of fresh powder! Wahoo! I didn't want to expose my precious camera to the snow, so I hope these iphone photos of my progress on the barn door quilt do it justice. I really love it. I ran into some trouble with some of the ends not being quite long enough (I'm looking at you, chambray!), so I decided to cut the end pieces longer and then trim down once I get the pieces … [Read more...]
