Strobist Boot Camp II – Assignment 2

July9

I was a little surprised when I got the second assignment for Strobist Boot Camp: food. I think of myself mostly as a portrait photographer and don’t spend a lot of time on inanimate objects. So, I tried to do a little research to see what the whole food photography thing is all about. And wow, it’s a whole different beast! I had no idea that some people have jobs to simply style food. I guess I kinda took for granted all that goes into making food look so delicious in magazines and cookbooks.

With a little research under my belt I opened the fridge to find it basically empty. Luckily I had some cherries on hand that I decided would be a good first subject. It was pretty challenging, but I actually really enjoyed it. Here are a few of my shots. I haven’t decided yet which one I’m going to turn in, but it will be one of these…

Strobist Boot Camp II -Assignment 1

June23

I’ve been reading David Hobby’s Strobist blog on off camera lighting for a while now. He always has great lighting tips and techniques. Well, now it’s time to put all those tips into action with strobist bootcamp: a series of assignments using off camera lighting. I missed round 1 in the past, but am excited to participate in the second round. The first assignment was a headshot, one of you and one of someone else. I’ve been so busy lately (yay!) that I haven’t had time to do this until the day before it was due (oops!), but it’s done.

While I’m not totally happy with it, it was a really good exercise on working quickly in less than ideal photo conditions. And I like my photo :) I think it will find it’s way to facebook soon!
